Gujarat’s Textile Sector Highlighted as Growth Engine at Vibrant Gujarat Conference at Rajkot

17 January 2026: The textile industry emerged as a central theme during the second day of the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference (VGRC) held in Rajkot, underscoring its role in driving economic development, employment generation, and sustainable growth in the state. Industry leaders, researchers, and policymakers discussed how innovation, technology adoption, and collaborative efforts are shapingGujarat’s textile ecosystem and strengthening its contribution to the state and national economy.

According to a press release issued by Chief Minister’s Office, experts at the conference examined the evolving role of textiles beyond manufacturing, positioning the sector as a catalyst for Gujarat’s broader economic transformation. Discussions focused on innovation-led growth, job creation, sustainability, and expanding India’s textile exports in global markets.

Industry representatives highlighted how the sector has developed a strong global identity, while emphasizing the need to continuously upgrade technological capabilities and design expertise to remain competitive. With fashion trends changing rapidly, speakers noted that innovation and advanced production technologies have become essential for maintaining quality and relevance in international markets.

The seminar was attended by senior industry stakeholders, including Welspun Group Resident Director Updeep Singh, Wazir Group Joint Managing Director Prashant Agrawal, Scientist DS Patel from the Cotton Research Centre at Navsari University, Chairman of the Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI) Ashwinchandra and President of the Cotton Association of India Vinay Kotak. The speakers observed that Gujarat’s textile industry has shown steady and sustained progress in recent years.

Globally, the textile industry is estimated to be valued at approximately USD 900 billion. To meet growing demand, experts stressed the importance of prioritising innovation, quality, and design. Cotton production remains a key strength for India, with Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana leading output. Gujarat continues to produce cotton in significant quantities, supported by improved agricultural practices.

The release also noted that the adoption of BT cotton has enabled farmers in Gujarat to increase productivity and secure better pricing. Speakers emphasised that the development of the textile sector requires coordinated efforts among farmers, industry, and government. Such collaboration is essential to expand cotton production and support the objective of increasing farmers’ income.

Advancements in eco-friendly manufacturing, innovation-driven production methods and the adoption of sustainable practices have further strengthened the sector. The textile industry continues to make a substantial contribution to Gujarat’s GDP and exports while supporting small and medium enterprises and expanding employment across handicrafts and machinery segments. Training and skill development initiatives for workers and artisans have also been implemented to support long-term growth.

Experts acknowledged challenges such as global competition, raw material price volatility and changing market demand. However, they noted that digitalisation, innovative production approaches, and new marketing strategies are expected to enhance the sector’s resilience and global competitiveness.

The seminar also saw participation from international dignitaries, including Rwanda’s High Commissioner, Jacqueline Mukangira.
