World’s largest ‘T-Shirt’ made out of 100% recycled 200,000 PET bottles

The Mother Nature was recently gifted with the world’s largest ‘T-Shirt’ made out of 100% recycled 200,000 PET bottles which is now a part of Guinness Book of World Records.

By the way, do you think that the plastic bottle especially the ubiquitous water bottles are meant for littering on the sea-beaches, railway tracks, open grounds, roads, nullas, rivers, shopping malls (as seen inside Dream Mall at Bhandup in Mumbai where people litter throw empty water bottles on stairs or floors, and even spill out and spit the red saliva from the mouth) …

January 05, 2018, recently about 2,00,000 ‘PET’ bottles were in news or rather say found a place indirectly in the Guinnesis Book of World Records upon creation of the world’s largest T-shirt made from these recycled plastic bottles, by the Plastindia Foundation, Mumbai, who organize the famous ‘PlastIndia exhibition, the recent being in Ahmedabad.

As confirmed by the Guinness World Records adjudicator Swapnil Dangarikar, the T-shirt measured a staggering 96.86 m (317.78 ft) long and 69.77 m (228.90 ft) wide, which broke the previous record held by Equilibrios Camisetas Promocionais who constructed a 93.2 m (305 ft 9.28 in) long and 62.73 m (205 ft 9.68 in) wide top in Brazil. The Large T-shirt took 3 days and more than 120 people to lay the 2600 kg T-shirt to be laid down for display.

By the way, the record-breaking t-shirt was not preserving on the shelf or to keep it in a museum of world records. But the fabric from this T-Shirt was later used to create 10,000 T-Shirts and distributed free to the children from economically weaker sections in the locality.

The Plastindia Foundation and its partners undertook a novel campaign to demonstrate the value of recycling. To promote their message in a big way, the Foundation decided to create a big or say a record attempt of making the world’s largest T-shirt out of 100% plastic waste. They collected approximately 200,000 used PET bottles, crushed it, recycled and processed them into fibre to create a whopping 4,000 kg of cloth. The effort which took 45 days for a team of 15 skilled tailors from International Knitwear Company along with 60 casual labours was stitched over two phases partly in Tirupur and then in Bhiwandi, a town near Mumbai in a 100,000 sq feet ware house. Once ready, the green and white t-shirt was transported to Goregaon Sports Club ground in Mumbai. The Official Guinness World Records adjudicator Swapnil Dangarikar was invited to measure the T-shirt, with the help of a professional surveyor. Hundreds of guests watched the process, and the Guinness World Record official declared that the T-shirt was the latest World Record in its category.

Commenting on the fete, Atul Kanuga, Chairman of the Environment and Plastics Image Committee at Plastindia Foundation, said: “Guinness World Records has given us the opportunity to showcase how the act of throwing away waste separately and correctly can result in a marvel, which will not only contribute to protecting our planet but will also enable hundreds of those who are deprived of basic human needs to have one moment of significant happiness. For us, that’s the most amazing record. The Guinness World Records really took our vision to the world. We are dedicating the ‘title’ to those who ‘believe there is hope for our planet’.”

Atul Kanuga further said: “The logic behind this initiative is to catch citizens’ attention on facts such as the dire need for everyone among us to be more responsible towards the environment, plastics waste can be managed effectively with understanding segregation at source and making citizens more conscious towards littering and mixing waste. Every bottle thrown responsibly can bring about not only an environmental change but also a social change.”

Jateen Rajput, Director of Consumer Links, said: “The concept of doing a T-shirt germinated from the fact that conventional recycling was a subject that was discussed and talked across forums and NGO meets. However, the need of the hour was to create a disruptive and experiential initiative which would draw attention, ignite surprise and make something that was huge and impossible into a believable fact.”

“A simple act of disposing a used bottle could cause a new revolution for social and climate change was the core message, and the T-shirt being converted to tangible clothing for 10,000 children was the best way to communicate how waste could be made into wealth and get Plastindia Foundation’s point across to the masses about the need for waste segregation. Consumer Links believes in always crafting tangible brand experiences and this was on point at the world’s Largest T-shirt for the Guinness World Records,” he asserted.

The event was supported by Manjushree Technopack which is one of the largest manufacturers of PET bottles in India, and Sushila Parmar International one of the largest importers of PVC raw material in India. The concept of this whole initiative was conceived and curated by Consumer Links, Mumbai.

The Initiative promoted by PLASTINDIA FOUNDATION and PLASTINDIA 2018 International Exhibition was a step towards saying “how a simple disruption of how we traditionally throw waste can change the lives of people and how this t-shirt made from waste plastics would go on to clothe 10,000 under privileged children across India housed with various NGO’s.”

According to Plastindia Foundation, India is likely to produce over 500 million tpa of urban waste by 2050; and 80 % of this will come from cities. Thus, the environment committee of plastindia foundation has been working for waste management , segregation at source, awareness, implementation of the guidelines of the government and other issues.
