ISRO is launching customised space-themed mugs, t-shirts and other merchandise

13 July 2021: Following the lead from NASA, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is also set to launch the customized coffee mugs, posters, t-shirts, posters, key chains, etc. as keepsakes for space enthusiasts. These merchandises will cover major Indian space agency missions starting from 1969.

ISRO is launching the merchandises is to spread awareness, specifically among students about the space and technology with these collectables. ISRO recently announced to develop space-theme based merchandise for children, students and the public showcasing the laurels and achievements of ISRO to the nation.

The space agency is all set to work on it and has proposed to identify the non-exclusive parties with a registration fee for sharing themes, images, etc. The parties that are interested in this can easily register with the space agency to start using the resources.

However, there are limitations to using the imagery and identifiers of ISRO by the selected party such as slippers, doormats. The selected party needs to maintain the reputation and image of ISRO in the 2D drawing and 3D models such as jigsaw puzzles, LEGO sets, etc. while ensuring accuracy.

ISRO will reserve the rights and audit the manufacturer’s products with the right to terminate the license agreement in case of any guidelines violations. ISRO said the rates for the merchandise will be reasonable, in line with the market, as there is no brand value charged by ISRO.

While some e-commerce websites sell T-shirts with the ISRO logo, officials said the organisation has no official tie-up with them. The idea to launch ISRO merchandise has been under discussion for a while now. Former Chairman K. Radhakrishnan spoke about it in 2013. And the current chairman, K. Sivan, who has initiated several outreach programmes to connect with people, especially students, is giving shape to it.
