3M Cooling Film launched for fleet and rail roofs

07 September 2026: 3M launched 3M Cooling Film on 2 September 2026 in St. Paul, Minnesota, a roof-applied heat-management film for fleet and rail vehicles. The company says the film reflects more than 85% of solar radiation, needs no extra power, and can lower cabin temperatures by up to 10°F (about 5.5°C).

“Heat is an increasing challenge for transportation operations in warmer climates, affecting fleet efficiency, cargo and comfort,” said Wendy Bauer, group president of 3M’s Transportation and Electronics Business Group. “3M™ Cooling Film helps customers address those challenges when every degree matters.”

How 3M Cooling Film works

Crews apply the white, opaque PVC film to the roof so heat is stopped at the skin rather than inside the cabin. 3M’s Cooling Film product page says the coating reflects more than 85% of incoming solar energy and has thermal emissivity over 91% in the atmospheric window, so absorbed heat is radiated back toward the cooler sky. The technical data sheet is slightly tighter on the first number: solar reflectivity of 85% under ASTM E903-12, and emissivity of 91% under ASTM E408-13.

3M also says treated roofs stay up to 10-30°F cooler. Those temperature figures are company claims, not an independent test published with the launch, and the data sheet says cooling depends on weather, substrate, insulation, and vehicle layout. Read the 10°F cabin figure as a stated maximum, not a result every van will hit. Heat-rejecting films are already used on glass, where architectural solar control window films cut interior heat on facades, but this product is a roof skin rather than a window tint.

Designed for fleet and rail roofs

The 2 September 2026 release names three roof uses: last-mile delivery fleets, refrigerated trucks and trailers, and passenger rail vehicles. 3M’s catalogue listing is broader and also includes buses, vans, trailers, metros, and locomotives.

Shops that already install 3M print wrap film will recognise the adhesive. Cooling Film uses Controltac pressure-activated adhesive and Comply air-release channels, so 3M says installers can slide, tack, and reposition it much as they would a graphic. Professional installation is the path 3M is selling, with the aim of getting vehicles back into service quickly. The film is not printable, and cut graphics laid on top will reduce cooling performance, according to the data sheet.

Warranty, durability, and limits

3M backs the film with a five-year 3M MCS Warranty from the installation date. Expected performance life is seven years, and that longer figure is unwarranted. A hard coat is specified to resist dirt, chemicals, and wear, and the launch copy adds UV, rain, and temperature cycling. 3M wants the film cleaned at least four times a year, more often in dirty environments, or reflectivity drops. Energy savings are described as potential, not measured in the release.

Application temperature on the data sheet is 60°F to 100°F (16°C to 38°C) for air, film, and substrate. Installers who already specify vehicle wrapping films for fleet branding can treat this as another roof film in a wrapping workflow.
