Giriraj Singh Unveils Report on India’s Rs.14.95 Lakh Crore Textile Market
08 April 2026: Union Minister of Textiles Shri Giriraj Singh released the report titled “Market for Textiles and Clothing: National Household Survey 2024” on April 6, 2026, in New Delhi. The study provides an assessment of domestic demand in the textiles and apparel sector, based on household consumption patterns.
Union Minister of Textiles Shri Giriraj Singh released the study report on domestic demand for textiles, “Market for Textiles and Clothing: National Household Survey 2024”, in the presence of Smt. Neelam Shami Rao, Secretary (Textiles) and senior officials from the Ministry of Textiles. The report, prepared by Textiles Committee, evaluates domestic demand in the textiles and clothing (T&C) sector and is intended as a reference for policymakers and industry stakeholders.
According to the study, the domestic textiles market has grown from Rs.4.89 lakh crore in 2010 to Rs.14.95 lakh crore in 2024, registering a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.3%. Within this, household demand increased from Rs.4.18 lakh crore in 2010 to Rs.8.77 lakh crore in 2024, contributing significantly to overall domestic demand.
Per capita demand rose from Rs.2,119 in 2010 to Rs.6,066 in 2024, reflecting a CAGR of 7.8%.
Man-made fibre (MMF) and blended fibre products account for 52.2% of the market, followed by cotton-based products at 41.2%. Silk and wool contribute 5.2% and 1.3%, respectively.
In absolute terms, demand for MMF and blended textiles increased from Rs.1.47 lakh crore to Rs.4.47 lakh crore, recording a CAGR of 8.28%. Cotton demand rose from Rs.0.87 lakh crore to Rs.3.53 lakh crore, with a CAGR of 10.53%. Demand for silk and wool products recorded CAGR growth of 8.93% and 7.02%, respectively.
Key indicators for 2024 include a total market size of Rs.14.95 lakh crore, a domestic market size of Rs.12.02 lakh crore, household demand of Rs.8.77 lakh crore, and per capita demand of Rs.6,066.
Women consumers account for 55.5% of textile purchases, compared to 44.5% by men. Frequently purchased products include shirts, sarees, trousers, salwar kameez, men’s jeans, T-shirts, ladies dress material, shirting, dhoti and banian and underwear. Men’s jeans recorded the fastest growth among menswear categories, while leggings gained prominence among women consumers.
The study also identifies growth in demand for sustainable textile products. The market for recycled, reused, reprocessed, and retailored garments is estimated at Rs.37,000 crore in 2024. Within this, reused and retailored textiles account for approximately 58% of consumption.
Demand for technical textiles has also increased, including products such as masks, sanitary napkins, bandage cloth, tents, seat cover fabrics, wipes, diapers, napkins, bandages, car seat covers, and surgical disposables. Rural households account for nearly 58% of technical textile consumption, while urban households contribute around 42%.
