Maruti Suzuki said the Kharkhoda facility is its most advanced vehicle manufacturing unit and will become an important part of its target to reach four million units of annual production capacity in India. The company’s present manufacturing network includes Gurugram, Manesar, Hansalpur and Kharkhoda.
Toshihiro Suzuki, Representative Director and President of Suzuki Motor Corporation, and Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and CEO of Maruti Suzuki India, were present at the event along with senior Indian government officials.
Suzuki said the Kharkhoda facility will be scaled from half a million units to one million units annually. At full scale, the company says it will be among the largest vehicle manufacturing facilities globally.
The plant has been developed on the Suzuki Smart Factory concept and uses digital technologies for real-time monitoring of operations. Maruti Suzuki said the system is designed to improve safety, quality and productivity while reducing energy use across manufacturing processes.
The facility also includes Industry 5.0 practices, including human-aware collaborative robots, or cobots, to support human-machine collaboration on the shop floor.
Sustainability is a major part of the project. Maruti Suzuki said the Kharkhoda plant meets 100% of its electricity requirement through renewable energy, using solar power and green energy procurement. The plant currently has 20 MWp of installed solar capacity, planned to rise to 70 MWp by 2030. A 10-tonne-per-day biogas plant and 1 MWh battery energy storage system are also being installed. The company said the plant operates as a zero liquid discharge facility, with full recycling of water. It also plans an in-plant railway siding to reduce road transport congestion and fuel use.
