ALLIED Down Carbon Audit Reports 85% Lower Emissions

19 September 2026: ALLIED Feather + Down announced on September 3, 2026 that an audit of its Hangzhou, China, plant calculated 0.48 kg of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) per kg of processed down. The ALLIED down carbon audit puts that figure 85% below the conventional-down estimate used for comparison, giving apparel brands more specific material data.

What did the ALLIED down carbon audit measure?

Green Threads DPP conducted the cradle-to-gate assessment using facility and supply-chain data, according to ALLIED. The stated boundary covered slaughterhouse impact, transport and processing at the Hangzhou site. It did not measure garment manufacturing, consumer use or disposal, so the result should not be read as the footprint of a finished jacket or its full life cycle.

ALLIED reported three comparisons: its 0.48 kg CO2e per kg result versus an estimated 3.2 kg for conventional down, 1.14 kg for recycled down and a polyester-fibre estimate that was about 20 times higher. These are benchmark comparisons presented by the company, not an independent ranking of every down or synthetic-insulation supplier.

The company’s environmental impact page also describes its calculator as a cradle-to-gate tool based on down sourced in China and processed in Hangzhou. It says the synthetic benchmark covers PET granulate production and conversion into polyester fibre, but excludes petroleum extraction, downstream manufacturing, transport and end-of-life pollution. That boundary matters when comparing natural and synthetic insulation.

How does the Hangzhou plant reduce processing emissions?

ALLIED said the facility reclaims 95% of its water, with roughly 5% lost through evaporation. Solar power, lower-temperature detergents and easier rinsing are intended to cut electricity, gas and water use. The audit calculations draw on annual energy, water, wastewater and detergent data, the company said.

This work sits within a wider push for measurable textile sustainability practices, where carbon, water, circularity and traceability increasingly need evidence rather than broad environmental claims.

Why does material-level carbon data matter?

Insulation choices are rarely like-for-like. A material’s weight, warmth, durability, processing route and system boundary can all change the result. Brands comparing down with textile-to-textile recycled polyester should therefore check what each figure includes before using it in sourcing or product claims.

The audit may also support product records. The European Commission’s Digital Product Passport programme is designed to make product and material information easier to access. Textile-specific requirements are expected through delegated acts in the third or fourth quarter of 2027, followed by a transition period of at least 18 months.

Traceable material data can also support repair, reuse and circular fashion systems. ALLIED said it will make the information available to partner brands and later through TrackMyDown hangtags and its website.

Which carbon-footprint standard applies?

ALLIED said its calculations follow ISO 14067:2018, PAS 2050:2011 and the apparel product category rules. ISO 14067:2018 sets principles, requirements and guidance for quantifying and reporting a product carbon footprint. The standard addresses climate change only.

FAQs

What does 0.48 kg CO2e per kg of down mean?

It is ALLIED’s reported cradle-to-gate greenhouse-gas result for processing one kilogram of down at its Hangzhou facility under the audit’s stated boundary.

Does the 85% reduction cover a finished garment?

No. The comparison concerns down processing and its selected supply-chain inputs. It does not represent the complete footprint of a jacket, sleeping bag or other finished product.
