Apple to manufacture iPhone 12 in India for local market
12 March 2021: Apple is reported to have a definite plan to start iPhone 12 production in India, according to online reports attributing IANS. These iPhone 12 smartphones will be meant for India market. Apple manufactures the iPhone SE (2020), the iPhone XR and iPhone 11 in India, through its contract manufacturing partners, Foxconn and Wistron.
Apple’s iPhone 12 is being manufactured at Taiwan-based Foxconn, the contract manufacturers for Apple, which already manufactures popular Apple models including the iPhone XR and iPhone 11.
As reported earlier, Foxcon, Wistron and Pegatron – Apple’s three contract manufacturers plan to invest about INR.66 billion (USD900 million) in India in the next 5 years to set up units under the new production-linked incentive plan (PLI).
It may be noted that the Ministry of Electronics and Information and Technology (MeitY) had approved 16 eligible applicants under the Production Linked Incentive Scheme (PLI). The international mobile phone manufacturing companies that are approved under Mobile Phone (Invoice Value INR 15,000 and above) Segment are: Samsung, Foxconn Hon Hai, Rising Star, Wistron and Pegatron. Out of these, 3 companies namely Foxconn Hon Hai, Wistron and Pegatron are contract manufacturers for Apple iPhones.
In September, 2020 Apple had launched the Apple Store online in India, offering Apple’s full range of products and support directly to customers across the country for the first time. It may be noted that Apple has been operating in India for more than 20 years, and the company’s ongoing investment and innovation support almost 900,000 jobs across the country. Apple’s App Design and Development Accelerator in Bengaluru has supported thousands of local developers. In 2016, Apple had launched a new initiative to support engineering talent and accelerate growth in India’s iOS developer community.
