Tata Group to Manufacture Apple iPhone 15 and 15 Plus in India

18 July 2023: Tata Group is planning to undertake iPhone assembly in India. Presently, Foxconn, Luxshare and Pegatron have iPhone assembly plants in India. Apple is looking to expand its manufacturing base in India, a report suggests that two of 2023 iPhone series phones will be Made in India. According to TrendForce, the Cupertino-based company may manufacture iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models in India. The report further states that the handsets will be assembled by Tata Group.

“Apple has been accelerating the diversification of its supply sources, with India being the most well-known case for such transfer. According to TrendForce, India’s Tata Group is expected to become the fourth iPhone assembler for Apple,” the report says.

This development could indicate that India will be part of the first wave of shipments for the new iPhone series that is expected to launch in September this year. Another implication is that Tata’s entry into the iPhone assembly business means Wistron’s exit from the country. Tata Group has already purchased Wistron’s iPhone plant in Bengaluru.

TrendForce emphasized that although Tata’s share of assembly orders for various iPhone models is only 5% in 2023, it still shows an accelerating trend of Apple’s production relocation. Tata Group will join the world’s exclusive group of iPhone manufacturers

JP Morgan has predicted that India may account for as much as 25% of all iPhone production by 2025. At present, India’s iPhone manufacturing sector makes around 7% of iPhones and employs roughly 63,000 workers. Apple is also investing in new office space in India’s Silicon Valley in Bengaluru and recently changed its global sales structure to prioritize and accelerate local decision-making.
