Global Sportswear Market Bets on Tech and Athleisure: Research and Markets

30 July 2026: The global sportswear market is expected to expand through 2031 as technology, athleisure and rising sports participation reshape demand. Research and Markets report for 2026-2031 lists a 4.04% compound annual growth rate from 2025 and names Nike, Adidas, ANTA Sports Goods, Lululemon Athletica and PUMA among its key vendors.

Technology moves into sportswear

Smart sensors, connected footwear and data-enabled fabrics are moving sportswear beyond basic clothing. Products can track movement, recovery and other performance measures, while advances in digital knitting, 3D printing and material science allow brands to refine fit, weight and support. The business case is clear: measurable performance gains help companies support premium pricing and build repeat demand.

Athleisure remains another major force. Stretch, moisture control and lighter technical fabrics have made sportswear suitable for work, travel and casual use, extending demand beyond gyms and playing fields.

Brands widen products and markets

Among recent developments, the report cites Nike’s Air Max 95 x LEGO collection and Adidas’ Supernova Rise 3 Adaptive, a running shoe created with the para-athlete community. It also says Lululemon plans to enter India by the end of 2026 through a franchise partnership with Tata CLiQ. These moves show how brands are using collaborations, adaptive design and new markets to find growth.

Apparel and North America lead

According to the report, apparel accounted for about 55% of the sportswear market in 2025. Sports-based products led by activity type, men represented the largest end-user segment, and wholesale was the leading distribution channel. North America held more than 39% of the market, while Asia-Pacific was identified as a fast-growing region supported by urbanisation and e-commerce.

Counterfeits remain a constraint

Easy access to counterfeit sportswear continues to hurt legitimate sales and brand trust. For vendors, the response will require stronger authentication, channel control and consumer education alongside product innovation.
