Textiles Minister Highlights AP Textile Hub Potential

01 June 2026: Union Textile Minister Giriraj Singh has said the Centre will continue supporting Andhra Pradesh’s efforts to strengthen its position as a textile manufacturing hub. During a two-day visit to the state, the minister reviewed textile and silk industry developments and discussed measures to improve productivity and investment in the sector.

Union textile minister Giriraj Singh stated that the Centre would extend full support to Andhra Pradesh in its efforts to develop into a major textile manufacturing hub. He also emphasized the need to improve cotton productivity and promote advanced textile manufacturing across the state.

As part of his two-day visit to Andhra Pradesh, Singh visited the Spintex India unit at Mallavalli Industrial Park in Bapulapadu mandal of Krishna district.

State Textile Minister S. Savitha and Spintex India managing director Vallabhaneni Sudhakar Chowdary accompanied the Union minister during the visit to the industrial unit.

Giriraj Singh also held discussions with industrialists regarding the establishment of silk and textile-related industries in Andhra Pradesh. He stated that the Centre and the state government were working in coordination to increase investment in the handloom sector.

The minister noted that Andhra Pradesh has the potential to emerge as a prominent textile manufacturing state and stressed the importance of enhancing cotton productivity. He pointed out that India currently averages nearly 2,000 kg per hectare in cotton production, compared with around 450 kg per hectare globally.

“Globally cotton averages nearly 2,000 kg per hectare, while India produces only around 450 kg per hectare. We need focused policies on modern cultivation practices to substantially improve cotton production,” he said.

According to Singh, Andhra Pradesh has already been recognised for its handloom sector. He added that the Centre recently approved one textile cluster for the state and that another cluster proposal is under consideration.

He further said coordinated efforts by the Centre and the state government would be necessary to strengthen the handloom sector. The minister noted that the Centre aims to position Andhra Pradesh as a major destination for both handlooms and modern textiles. He also highlighted emerging opportunities in sectors including glass fibre, carbon fibre and graphene.
