India Plans 11 Skill Debuts at WorldSkills Shanghai 2026

11 September 2026: India plans to enter 11 skill categories for the first time at WorldSkills Shanghai 2026, the 48th WorldSkills Competition, in Shanghai, China, from 22-27 September 2026. Announced on 9 September, the expansion will give Indian competitors more opportunities to test their abilities against international occupational standards.

According to the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship announcement, Team Skill India expects to compete in 63 of the event’s 64 skills with nearly 70 competitors. These are pre-event participation plans, not final attendance figures.

India’s new entries at WorldSkills Shanghai 2026

The ministry identifies the following 11 disciplines as first-time entries for India: Dental Prosthetics, Digital Interactive Media Design, Intelligent Security Technology, Landscape Gardening, Optoelectronic Technology and Retail Sales.

The remaining entries are Unmanned Aerial Systems, Industrial Mechanics, Software Testing, Heavy Vehicle Technology and Aircraft Maintenance.

Here, “new” refers to India’s participation, rather than a claim that all 11 disciplines are making their global WorldSkills debut. The organiser’s official skills directory lists the competition fields and describes the work each involves.

Digital Interactive Media Design combines design and technology to create interactive experiences, while Software Testing focuses on identifying software defects before users encounter them. Dental Prosthetics involves creating and repairing dental devices, and Heavy Vehicle Technology covers the repair and maintenance of large machines and industrial equipment.

The ministry’s accompanying descriptions also cover intelligent security systems that protect people and infrastructure, landscape gardening that combines design with construction, and industrial mechanics focused on assembling, maintaining and troubleshooting machinery. These entries extend beyond digital occupations.

Industry partners support India’s preparation

The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship leads India’s participation, while the National Skill Development Corporation coordinates preparation with training institutions, industry partners and technical experts.

The ministry names Government Tool Room and Training Centre, Karnataka; Metrowoods Landscape; NAMTECH, Gandhinagar; Bennett University; Croma; Titan Company Ltd’s Tanishq; Shoppers Stop; Reliance Trends; SANY Heavy Industry India Pvt. Ltd.; Prakhar Software Solutions Ltd.; and Denexpert Dental Lab among the supporting organisations.

Industry-linked preparation has featured in earlier Indian entries, including Likith YP’s prototype modelling bronze in 2022. The ministry says the current programme combines expert mentoring, structured training and international exposure.

Retail Sales also brings customer-facing work into India’s expanded competition programme. Separately, Canon India’s skill centres illustrate employment-focused training that includes retail. That initiative is distinct from the Shanghai team preparation described in the ministry’s announcement.
