Archroma Launches Erthana Biobased Packaging Platform

30 October 2026: Archroma Packaging Technologies launched Erthana™, a biobased chemistry platform for paper and packaging producers, at PACK EXPO International 2026 in Chicago, held on 18-21 October 2026. Its first oil and grease barrier and dry strength resin aim to reduce fossil-based inputs while maintaining performance, according to the company.

The launch extends the adhesives, barriers and coatings range outlined in Archroma’s earlier Labelexpo portfolio preview. The company says Erthana combines natural-source ingredients with technical expertise and application support.

Erthana starts with two packaging products

  • Erthana OGB: a biobased oil and grease barrier for fibre-based packaging.
  • Erthana DSR: a biobased dry strength resin for paper, packaging and tissue applications.

Archroma’s OGB product information lists applications including takeaway wraps, cartons, food trays and moulded-fibre packaging. It says customer testing has included pilot and industrial-scale trials. Archroma says the ingredients do not compete with the food chain. Further products are in development and expected in 2027; this is a development timetable.

Application trials before production

Archroma’s platform description sets out a staged process: match the chemistry to the substrate and regulatory requirements, validate it on pilot equipment, then conduct full-scale trials on the customer’s production line. Ongoing support covers changes in substrates, specifications and regulations.

Archroma previously announced packaging innovation centre plans that included fibre and board packaging research.

Food-contact claims and certification status

The launch release describes the range as FDA, BfR and BPI compliant. However, Archroma’s Erthana OGB product page explicitly states that BPI certification is in progress. For buyers, the relevant evidence is the documentation covering the chosen formulation and intended use, rather than a platform-wide sustainability description. Archroma also cautions that availability varies by country or region, so converters need to confirm local supply.

PPWR requirements already apply

Archroma links Erthana to the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and extended producer responsibility requirements. The European Commission confirms that PPWR began applying on 12 August 2026, with further obligations taking effect in phases.

Lisa Clark, VP Marketing & Sustainability at Archroma Packaging Technologies said “Packaging producers and brand owners are under growing pressure to move away from fossil-based materials and to comply with regulations such as the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) laws – all without sacrificing performance.”

“Erthana™ combines our sustainability ambitions with production-proven chemistry. It gives customers a practical way to meet these requirements and make real progress towards circular packaging. Ultimately, Erthana is sustainable chemistry made possible.”
