E Ink and FUJIFILM Imaging Systems Plan Colour ePaper Signage
27 October 2026: E Ink and FUJIFILM Imaging Systems announced a partnership on October 21, 2026, to develop large-format colour ePaper signage for Japan’s railway sector. Commercial introductions should begin in 2027 if prototype assessments succeed, offering railway operators an alternative to printing and physically replacing advertising posters.
FUJIFILM Imaging Systems will bring its railway-sector business relationships and implementation experience, while E Ink will contribute its display technology. The planned service covers customer proposals, installation and ongoing operation. Transport applications also featured in Screen Print India’s earlier coverage of SuperUs ePaper displays, including bus-stop information displays and digital seat tags.
Colour ePaper signage: the proposed release schedule
The partners have announced separate prototype and mass-production dates for two E Ink Marquee formats:
| Display format | Prototype release | Mass-production release |
|---|---|---|
| 55-inch E Ink Marquee | December 2026 | March 2027 |
| B1-size E Ink Marquee | October 2027 | January 2028 |
The 2027 commercial introduction therefore concerns the 55-inch format; the B1 version follows in 2028 under the published timetable. These are planned milestones, not evidence of completed installations. The announcement does not identify railway customers, installation sites or pricing.
Why start with Japan’s railway posters?
E Ink cites labour shortages and the rising cost of printing, transporting, installing and disposing of paper posters as reasons to consider electronic alternatives. Digital content changes could reduce the need to distribute and replace physical advertising material, although the release provides no quantified operating-cost savings.
E Ink Holdings president JM Hung said the company sees an opportunity to replace traditional print posters in Japan’s transportation industry. He described print-like visibility and digital updates as a combination that could reduce printing and material waste while using little power. These are company expectations, rather than measured results from this partnership.
What does the Marquee platform offer?
E Ink describes Marquee colour ePaper technology as a four-particle colour system for outdoor and digital out-of-home signage. Its product page gives a preliminary operating-temperature range of -20°C to 65°C. Those platform figures should not be treated as confirmed specifications for either planned railway display.
Separately, E Ink says Marquee development targets include displays up to 75 inches diagonally and update times of five to seven seconds. These are development goals for the wider platform, not additional sizes or guaranteed refresh speeds in the Japanese partnership’s launch schedule.
For readers comparing display types, the ePaper display explainer in Screen Print India’s Keetronics interview describes how electronic paper reflects ambient light rather than emitting its own. Lighting conditions therefore remain a practical consideration when assessing a signage location.
Fujifilm plans support beyond the display panel
FUJIFILM Imaging Systems serves as the Fujifilm Group’s domestic sales company for imaging products in Japan. Its business covers photography, video and information products and services for individual and corporate customers, according to the announcement.
Takashi Toyofuku, a director at FUJIFILM Imaging Systems, said the company would bring expertise in imaging, printing, colour management and quality control, alongside established customer relationships. The partners intend to begin with railway advertising and signage before pursuing other industries across Japan.
The proposal adds a railway focus to the applications beyond e-readers discussed in Screen Print India’s earlier E Ink mobility coverage. For this partnership, the next step is prototype assessment; the announcement does not establish a completed deployment or a commitment to replace all railway posters.
