Indian Team to Wear Jute Apparel at Commonwealth Games 2026
11 July 2026: India’s Commonwealth Games 2026 contingent will wear jute-viscose blended apparel developed by the National Jute Board, placing the country’s natural fibre sector on an international sporting platform.
The Games are scheduled to be held in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2, 2026. According to Commonwealth Sport and the Glasgow 2026 organising website, the event will bring together athletes from 74 nations and territories across a 10-sport programme.
The National Jute Board, under the Ministry of Textiles, developed the apparel as part of efforts to promote value-added jute applications and Make in India products. The Ministry said the jute-viscose blended fabric is 100 percent biodegradable and is intended to present jute as a modern, sustainable textile option.

The official kit unveiling and send-off ceremony was held in New Delhi on July 7. It was attended by Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh, Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Raksha Khadse, Indian Olympic Association President P. T. Usha and members of the IOA Executive Council.
According to the Ministry of Textiles, this will be the first time jute-based apparel is showcased at an international multi-sport event. The move is expected to give visibility to Indian jute, Indian garment design and the farmers connected with the jute value chain.
The National Jute Board facilitated the fabric development with support from Gloster Jute Mills, Kolkata. The apparel was designed by the National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi, using the specially developed jute-viscose blend. The products were earlier displayed during the National Jute Board Foundation Day celebrations in Patna on April 1, 2026.
The initiative is also linked to the National Jute Board’s Jute Diversification Programme, which seeks to expand jute beyond conventional packaging into apparel, lifestyle and other value-added applications.
For India, the Glasgow Games will now carry a textile message as well as a sporting one: natural fibres can move into contemporary apparel when design, industry and sports bodies work together.
