PRINTING United Alliance and Ghent Workgroup Back UCP for Print
21 July 2026: PRINTING United Alliance and the Ghent Workgroup have joined dev.ucp.print, an industry project seeking a print-specific extension to the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). Their participation adds North American representation and PDF and prepress expertise to a group formed in Europe in May 2026.
Project Now Has Eight Industry Bodies
Initiative Online Print (IOP), the German Printing and Media Industries Federation (BVDM) and Intergraf started the project. Swiss trade body dpsuisse, Belgian research centre VIGC and print workflow standards group CIP4 joined in June. PRINTING United Alliance and the Ghent Workgroup were announced as partners on 10 July.
Google introduced UCP on 11 January 2026 as an open-source commerce standard for consumer interfaces, merchants, payment providers and software agents. The current specification covers functions such as product discovery, cart building, checkout, identity linking and order management.
Why Print Needs a Separate Extension
Print orders often require steps that fixed retail products do not. Buyers may need to configure size, paper, finish and quantity; upload artwork; pass preflight checks; approve proofs; receive a price based on those choices; and get a delivery date tied to production capacity. The coalition says the current UCP specification does not yet cover these print-specific requirements.
The Ghent Workgroup will bring its knowledge of PDF-based production and print-ready file checks to the project. Its specifications and Ghent PDF Output Suite are widely used in prepress testing.
“The way print will be found, ordered, and processed in the future is becoming one of the most critical issues for our industry,” said Ford Bowers, chief executive of PRINTING United Alliance. Ghent Workgroup chair David Zwang said the project can give printing and packaging businesses a common voice in the development of AI-led design and purchasing processes.
Formal Proposal Planned for Late 2026
The group plans to draft the print specification and submit it to the UCP project in the fourth quarter of 2026. Its working namespace is dev.ucp.print. The proposed extension would let software agents find, configure, price and order print products while carrying the files and approval steps required before production.
Intergraf estimates that Europe’s printing industry comprises about 110,000 companies and 550,000 employees. The backers say a print extension could help these businesses describe products and production steps in a form software agents can process.
