Screen Printing Drives Value Addition in Packaging Applications

01 September 2026: Screen printing for packaging adds opaque colour, tactile finishes and selected functional layers to cartons, rigid boxes, bottles, jars and tubes. It works on flat or shaped components and can sit beside offset, flexographic, gravure or digital printing. Its main advantage is control: the printer can place a distinct ink or coating only where the design needs it.

Why screen printing for packaging works

Ink passes through open areas of a stencilled mesh, allowing the printer to control where it lands and how the deposited layer behaves. With the right ink, mesh and settings, the process can produce strong opacity on dark or transparent materials, a result that matters on cosmetic bottles, beverage containers and coloured plastics.

Substrate range is broad, but never automatic. Paperboard, glass, metal, coated surfaces and pre-treated plastics may all be printable; adhesion still depends on the ink system and surface preparation. For example, the INX screen ink range described for K 2025 covers bottles, tubes and labels, while listing resistance, compliance and substrate limits for each formulation.

Which decorative effects suit the process ?

Screen printing can add spot gloss, matte areas, texture, raised details, metallic colour and other selected effects without covering the whole package. The effect is part of the ink or coating system, not an automatic property of the press, so converters must match chemistry, film thickness and curing to the job.

Metallic inks show why that choice matters. Metallic packaging ink options differ in brilliance, coverage, reflectivity and price. Sun Chemical’s metallic solutions portfolio also spans several pigment forms and print systems; a mirror-like result and a restrained shimmer therefore require different materials and production settings.

Where do ink safety and recyclability change the decision ?

Packaging ink selection starts with the packed product, substrate, print location and end use. Food, beverage and cosmetic packs may require low-migration formulations, while bottles can also need resistance to water, chemicals, sterilisation or dishwashing. A relevant case is Marabu’s low-migration bottle ink, developed for exterior printing on pre-treated PE and PP packaging.

Environmental claims need the same discipline. Water-based, low-VOC or UV-LED-curable ink can change production emissions or energy use, but none makes a finished pack recyclable by itself. The RecyClass approval for specific inks covers named UV/LED products under stated conditions; it is not certification of every package that uses them. Siegwerk’s circular packaging guidance likewise treats inks as one part of the final structure.

How does screen printing fit a hybrid packaging line ?

On many jobs, another process prints photographs, text and large colour areas first. Screen printing then adds an opaque white, tactile coating, metallic detail or selected varnish. This split keeps each process on the work it handles best rather than asking one press to do everything.

UV-LED curing can support immediate downstream handling when the ink and lamp output match. Marabu’s UV-LED glass screen inks, for instance, are intended for packaging glass, cosmetic bottles, ceramics, metals and PETG, with pre-treatment required for some materials. Converters should still test adhesion, cure, resistance and compatibility with the pack’s recovery route before approving production.

FAQs

Can screen printing decorate curved packaging ?

Yes. Suitable equipment can print cylindrical and shaped items such as bottles, jars and tubes. The fixture, screen geometry, ink and surface treatment must suit the container.

Is screen printing always economical for short packaging runs ?

No. It can suit limited editions and selected premium details, but cost depends on screen preparation, colour count, changeovers, curing and waste. Digital printing may be the better route for highly variable artwork or very small quantities.
