UPI at 10: July 2026 Volume Hits 2,366 Crore Transactions
25 August 2026: India will mark the UPI 10-year milestone on 25 August 2026, a decade after participating banks began releasing UPI-enabled apps. The NPCI-run payment system has since become a daily rail for transfers and merchant purchases across the country, while its scale has drawn attention far beyond India.
UPI 10-year milestone: July volume reaches 2,365.84 crore
National Payments Corporation of India data show that UPI processed 23,658.35 million transactions in July 2026. That equals 2,365.84 crore transactions, up from 2,320.19 crore in May and 2,271.61 crore in June.
July’s transactions carried INR 29,87,880.49 crore, or about INR 29.88 lakh crore. Spread across the month, the volume averaged roughly 76.32 crore transactions a day. NPCI also listed 741 banks live on UPI in July, compared with 720 in May.
Those numbers make the change easy to see. UPI handles small purchases at shops and online checkouts, but the same interoperable system also moves money between individuals. Customers can choose a participating app without requiring the recipient to use that same app.
Why has UPI grown so quickly ?
Interoperability sits at the centre of UPI’s reach. Banks and payment apps connect to one shared system, so users can pay a person or merchant through a UPI ID, mobile number or QR code. That common setup reduced the closed networks that once split digital-payment users into separate pools.
An International Monetary Fund FinTech Note published in June 2025 examined UPI as a leading example of interoperable retail payments. The report described UPI as the world’s largest retail fast-payment system by transaction volume and connected its growth with open participation across banks and non-bank payment providers.
What does the next phase require ?
Scale creates harder work. Banks, apps and NPCI must keep failure rates low as traffic rises, while fraud controls and customer redress need to keep pace. Cross-border links may widen where UPI can be used, but acceptance, remittance connections and full domestic deployment are different arrangements and shouldn’t be counted as one thing.
