India Solar Capacity Reaches 168.04 GW at End-August 2026

03 October 2026: India solar capacity reached 168.04 GW nationwide as of 31 August 2026, according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). Its latest monthly figures update the July milestone of 164.59 GW and show the growing scale of solar installations, including rooftop systems relevant to industrial electricity users.

The ministry’s physical progress report records 3,445.30 MW of solar capacity additions during August and 17,779.35 MW between 1 April and 31 August 2026.

India solar capacity: what the August figures include

MNRE reports a cumulative solar total of 168,040.05 MW. Its rounded breakdown shows that ground-mounted plants account for the largest portion, while grid-connected rooftop installations form a separate, substantial segment.

  • Ground-mounted solar plants: 123.99 GW.
  • Grid-connected rooftop solar: 32.59 GW.
  • Solar component of hybrid projects: 4.83 GW.
  • Off-grid solar: 6.63 GW.

This classification matters: the national solar total includes off-grid systems as well as grid-connected installations.

What the expansion means for printing and textile businesses

For printing and textile companies, rooftop solar is a practical connection between national energy figures and factory operations. Earlier industry reporting provides examples of businesses adopting it, although individual company experiences do not establish savings for every plant.

In a 2023 interview with Screen Print India, Tirupur-based Print Harvest described its rooftop solar installation at its textile-printing unit. The company presented the investment as part of its efforts to meet electricity requirements through renewable power.

Screen Print India also reported on Tropic Knits’ factory solar installation in Coimbatore in 2024, citing company statements. These examples show industrial adoption in practice; neither provides a basis for promising a standard payback period or a fixed reduction in electricity bills.

Manufacturing capacity is a different measure

Solar deployment and solar manufacturing describe different parts of the industry. Installed power capacity measures generating equipment already in place. Module manufacturing capacity concerns the ability to produce panels, which may serve future domestic projects or other markets.

Screen Print India’s earlier coverage of solar module manufacturing capacity provides background on that supply chain. Manufacturing figures must remain separate from MNRE’s installed-power total; adding them together would misrepresent the country’s electricity-generating capacity.

FAQs

Does 168.04 GW mean India generates that much solar electricity continuously?

No. GW measures power capacity, whereas electricity generation over a period uses energy units such as GWh. The MNRE capacity table does not establish continuous output, solar’s share of electricity supplied or the amount of fossil-fuel generation displaced.

How does the August update relate to July’s 164.59 GW?

Subtracting August’s reported addition of 3,445.30 MW from the cumulative 168,040.05 MW gives 164,594.75 MW, consistent with July’s rounded 164.59 GW. The July figure therefore remains a valid earlier milestone, but the August figure provides the more recent reference for this report.
